Merlot is a grape variety that comes from the Bordeaux
region. Do not forget that the Bergerac wine region is less than 40 kms from
the lands of Saint-Emilion.
This is the grape variety that brings roundness and fineness to great wines, the
blends of Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon.
It is less tannic than its homologue.
This grape variety is consistent and does not depend much on the
weather, it presents no unpleasant surprises. It is early, it matures quickly.
It is well balanced and can be drunk
young, but it also keeps very well.
Its garnet colour makes it a voluptuous variety. It is supple, round and delicate in the mouth. Its main characteristics
are to be very fruity and generate little acidity. It has a dark nose, and
releases fragrances of berries and
spices.
At Chateau La Maroutie, the whole harvest is aged in oak barrels for six
to eight months. This process allows the wine to acquire the wood tannins that add to those contained in
the grape bunch, and make it less susceptible to future oxidation because it is
in constant contact with the air that enters between the staves. Barrel aging refines the structure of
the wine and enhances its bouquet.
Our Merlot can be drunk with first courses such as quiches, terrines or savoury
pastries. It is known for harmonizing to perfection with roasted meat or game,
finely spiced dishes and with cheeses. It combines perfectly with all pork
presentations: rillettes, sausages, ham or pork chops.
If stored properly, it can keep up to 10 years. It is
served between 15 and 17 degrees C.
